2019/2020 PTA Initiatives & Goals
Strengthening the Perry Harrison community and helping our children grow and succeed is our PTA’s primary objective. Having fun while doing it and building friendships and fond memories along the way is a close second!
Let’s start by telling you WHAT the PTA is…Today’s PTA is a network of millions of families, students, teachers, administrators, and business and community leaders devoted to the educational success of children and the promotion of family engagement in schools.
WHY we do it…A number of studies conducted over the past 30 years (more than 85 of them!) prove that kids do better when parents are involved; grades are higher, test scores improve, and attendance increases.
WHO we are…We’re currently a *very* small group of parents, teachers and administrators working tirelessly to make our school a better place.
Would it surprise you to learn that in a school the size of ours -- with more than 850 students or approximately 600 families -- less than 5% of our community is actively involved in PHS events (PTA or otherwise)?
We’ve heard many parents comment that the “school is huge so they must have it covered.” THIS IS A MYTH! The reality is that there’s the same 20-25 individuals who continually turn out for meetings and events.
We cannot emphasize enough that the PTA is not ONE person, nor is it just the board members and committee chairs. It is ALL of PHS. Every teacher, staff member, parent, grandparent or relative. We need all of you to effect real change and make PHS an even more amazing school for your children and for us.
Click here for the PTA meeting calendar. Agendas will be posted prior to each meeting. The PTA website also includes sign up opportunities for committees, projects and events. Be sure to register on the site to start receiving our weekly newsletter.
HOW the PTA works…Parents can involve themselves in one of three ways:
Whether its volunteering in the classroom or the cafeteria, helping with a school beautification project like mulch spreading, weed pulling or bench making, or serving on a committee (e.g. hospitality, fashion show, thrift shop or raffle baskets), we need your help! Your time is our most precious commodity. And we know it’s limited. That’s why we're working hard this year to accommodate a wide-range of schedules to help maximize your participation.
Are you a master gardener or builder, a craft person extraordinaire, or an amateur coach? Have you relocated from another area and have a ton of cool and proven PTA ideas? Are you a small business owner or business/community leader with a network we can tap into? If so, we want to hear from you! Leveraging your expertise and personal interests benefits everyone – especially our kids!
And, Yes, Your Money
It’s not our primary objective but what they say is true – money makes the world (and elementary schools) go round. The PTA helps raise money to fund school projects and activities that fall outside of the administration’s budget. The new playground equipment, digital signage, beautification projects, teacher workshops and staff appreciation activities are just a few examples of what the PTA funds. One of our many goals this year is fewer, more focused fundraising opportunities and an increase in community partnerships.
Still have questions or want to know more? We’re all about transparency so most information is posted on this website, including the approved 2019-2020 budget and key announcements throughout the school year. But if you don’t see what you want to know, feel free to contact Jay Radford, PTA Board President and wicked fast email responder: firstname.lastname@example.org.
